Trump Claims Victory: ‘Guess What, We’re Saying Merry Christmas Again’

President Donald Trump attended the Values Voter Summit Friday and spoke to a crowd of conservative, evangelical Christian attendees about an issue near and dear to them: the Judeo-Christian values that he said have come under attack.

“We are stopping cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values,” Trump told the crowd, before lamenting that department stores no longer say “Merry Christmas.”

“You know, we’re getting near that beautiful Christmas season that people don’t talk about anymore,” he said. “They don’t use the word ‘Christmas’ because it’s not politically correct. You go to department stores, and they’ll say, ‘Happy New Year’ and they’ll say other things. And it’ll be red, they’ll have it painted, but they don’t say it.”

But Trump said that time has come to end.

“Well guess what, we’re saying ‘Merry Christmas again,’” he said.

Trump also used the opportunity to call on Congress to pass “massive” tax cuts as a “Christmas present” to American families.

Trump was specific about the tax policies he wants to see changed.

“That includes increasing the child tax credit and expanding it to eliminate the marriage penalty,” he said.

The Values Voter Summit has been held annually by the Family Research Council since 2006. Trump is the first sitting president to address the summit, but he also spoke at the gathering in 2015 as a Republican primary candidate and in 2016 as the Republican presidential nominee.

In previous years, Trump has also focused on Christmas and the strengthening of religious values, an area in which he believes he has made progress.

“If I did have a schedule, I would say we are substantially ahead of schedule,” he said. “I pledged that, in a Trump administration, our nation’s religious heritage would be cherished, protected, and defended like you have never seen before. That’s what’s happening..”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins agrees that Trump had made progress.

“After eight years enduring the Obama administration’s hostility toward everything from religious liberty to the unborn, values voters were eager to see President Trump accelerate the undoing of Obama’s policies,” Perkins wrote in a piece for Breitbart.

Among Trump’s victories, Perkins listed “reinstituting and expanding the pro-life Mexico City Policy, nominating strong constitutionalist Neil Gorsuch for the U.S. Supreme Court, protecting religious liberty through executive order, and shielding our military from the radical social experimentation of the Obama years by ending one of its most extreme policies regarding transgenderism.”
